In December 2019, I presented at the MinneAnalytics FASTCON in Saint Paul, MN on behalf of Bushel. My talk explored the complexity of managing data in agriculture, especially the challenges of variety (different formats, systems, crops, and regions) and veracity (trustworthiness and accuracy of data) across the grain supply chain.
π Key Challenges in Ag Data
- Variety: Multiple ERPs, custom accounting systems, and inconsistent crop classification standards
- Veracity: Disparate data entry, time zone issues, missing or incorrect records
- Velocity & Volume: Real-time tickets, contracts, and delivery data from millions of transactions
- Data Wrangling: AI and machine learning used to standardize, categorize, and stream data cleanly
π§ Bushel's Solution
- Modern Digital Infrastructure: Connecting elevators, growers, and processors through real-time, transparent, mobile-ready platforms
- White-Labeled Tools: Apps branded by local elevators but powered by Bushel tech
- ERP Integrations: Pull/push architecture with robust APIs and notification systems
- Bushel Connect: Seamlessly links logistics, accounting, agronomy, and insurance data across stakeholders
π Impact
- 2.1 Billion bushels of tracked grain across the Bushel platform
- 18,000+ monthly active users, 16% U.S. grain market penetration
- Substantial reduction in paper use and mailing costs
- Near real-time access to contracts, balances, and settlements for growers
π Vision
βTo connect and enhance the grain industry through digital infrastructure.β
β Bushel Vision Statement
Bushel envisions a future where grain moves from producer to processor with full visibility and traceability. This presentation laid out not only the technical challenges but also the cultural shift needed to modernize one of the least-digitized industries in America.
